JEIMUN2025’s agenda has been decided as
“Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty”.
Needless to say, Japan is a country that retains the death penalty, and last year, 13 executions were carried out. On the other hand, if we look at the countries of the world, the number of countries that retain the death penalty and the number of executions have been gradually decreasing over the past few decades. Discussions on the abolition of the death penalty, the human rights of death row inmates, and moratoriums on executions have been ongoing in regional organizations and at the United Nations from various perspectives. Some of these discussions might come from viewpoints that we don’t often encounter.
With that being said, in our daily lives, we may rarely have the opportunity to deeply consider the concept of rights. Whether or not we are put in a situation where we have to consciously think about them, or whether we recognize such situations, probably varies from person to
person. However, in the debate on the death penalty, which involves the significant consequence of life or death, how we conceive of rights—something that might not normally be evident—becomes a relatively clear issue. Each country and each individual has different views on rights, and the backgrounds from which those views stem are also diverse. We hope that through the experience of forming your assigned country’s stance in preparation and negotiating with other countries during the conference, you will reflect on how to conceptualize abstract ideas like rights. Rather than assuming that a certain stance is obviously correct based on the
topic or the country involved, we would like you to try to understand the basis of the discussion and the opinions of other countries as thoroughly as possible.
This is undoubtedly a difficult topic, but we look forward to seeing how you, as representatives of your countries, can reach decisions and what solutions you can come up with through careful deliberation. Additionally, we hope that during this process, you will be able to form your own
opinions about the topic and the positions of the various countries, considering the reasons behind your thoughts.
Please wait for the background guide to be released soon!
There’s still time to apply for JEIMUN. If you’re interested, we highly encourage you to participate!
